Launched in 2001, the .NAME TLD is the single TLD planned for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domains remained operational.
